Peregian Duplex

The houses have been designed to maximise the superb views from the site whilst ensuring a high degree of privacy and amenity within the individual dwellings. A further driving factor in the design was to pursue a highly integrated approach to both passive and active sustainable design initiatives. The form of the two buildings came about through a desire for each dwelling to ‘open up’ to the cooling north easterly breezes, whilst providing a high degree of protection from south and south easterly weather. The resulting ‘boomerang’ plan has the added benefit of all living and bedrooms spaces enjoying east / north easterly views, cross ventilation and winter sun. The houses are designed to ‘amplify’ summer breezes through the incorporation of  the stairwells ‘atrium’ roof, adjacent breezeway and swimming pool. The ‘open’ three level stairwell features a glazed roof with high level ventilation. As heat rises through this light shaft and is vented at the top it pulls cooler air from the north east through and across each floor plate. Air moving across the swimming pool is further cooled through evaporation and is pulled into the breezeway space and dispersed vertically and horizontally through the building. This ‘Stack Effect’ encourages and in many ways creates air movement within the buildings. This natural ventilation can, if necessary, by supplemented with ceiling fans and concealed split A/C system to living areas and bedrooms.

The single room width of the plans also contributes to an abundance of natural light and ventilation. The ‘three tiered’ roof is also an environmental initiative and is the result of  a desire to attain a north facing roof, on a easterly sloping site, whilst maximizing heights. It is intended that the northern most roof to each house incorporate an array of photovoltaic cells to generate a large degree of the houses energy requirements. Splitting and stepping of the roof into three tiers also provides for clerestory glazing, allowing diffused southern light to awash the top level living spaces.

Each house also incorporates thermal glazing, materials sourced from sustainable resources, a 14000l rainwater tank, and a designated veggie and herb garden.
